Themes In Daedalus And Icarus - 1250 Words

The balance of human hubris is unstable and can come crumbling down at any second; On two ends of the spectrum we have pride and punishment. One giving man a ego and pushing him to his emotional high while the other forces him back into reality. In Daedalus and Icarus it illustrates this with Icarus plummeting back down to earth with a deathwish just after experiencing the literal high of his life. In other words American clergyman John C. Maxwell puts it â€Å"There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. Good pride represents our dignity and self-respect. Bad pride is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance†. The fine red line between good pride and bad was ridden by many in ancient greek myths only for most†¦show more content†¦Icarus’s pride stems from his fathers achievement and his ability to fly a godly power. He flies closer and closer to the sun with the euphoria of flight growing more every seconds but forgets his fathers warning about not flying to close to the sun. Godly power must be reserved for those who are able to hold the power, in Icarus’s time flight was considered a godly power. Having the ability to fly and doing it with such hubris as he â€Å"imagined himself as a god as well. The joy of flying bubbled up in him, and he banked and spiralled upwards in the heat haze. He came closer and closer to the Sun, and the heat softened and loosened the wax that held his wings together.† It was Icarus’s own hubris that lead to his downfall as he plummeted into the ocean touched by the sun itself and now paying the price with his punishment. Daedalus gave his son immense power and told him how to use it accordingly. They flew through the skies during their escape and at first Icarus keeps to himself listening to his father but eventually the flight took hold of him and he flew higher and higher until his wings melted. Analysis Of The Movie Hope Springs - 1173 Words

The movie that is being reviewed is titled Hope Springs. It came out in 2012 and stars Tommy Lee Jones, Meryl Streep and Steve Carell. Kay and Arnold is a couple who has been married thirty-one years, have two adult children and sleep in separate rooms. Kay realizes that they have lost that spark or intimacy in their marriage. Kay goes to a bookstore to try to find a book to get help and finds that they author of the book who is a couples therapist hosts a week long marriage therapy session in Hope Springs Maine so she takes the lead and makes the reservations, when Kay tells Arnold of this he does not want any part of it as he does not see a problem in the marriage. She lets him know that she will go with or without him. In the end he decided to go and boards the plane. As a democratic leader, I aspire to possess some certain qualities of the previously mentioned personalities who are known to be some of the most influential academic leaders in modern time. My entity as a leader shall have to be innovative. The basic leadership quality of a person encompasses creativity and improvisation of the thought process. While comprehending deep about my contribution to the grater student mass, I have realised that my basic intention was to make them understand the goal of their life. However, there are different ways of to edify and educate the students. I would often ask myself, Should I teach them or should they learn from me? Should they be students of mine or should they follow the path I recreate? These questions were to be answered on a proper note. Thus, my realisation was begotten by my rational mind that my traits can never be imposed upon the students as long as they do not want to imbibe those spontaneously. This was the first step to my democratic leadership quality as I learnt to put my decisions into rationality. My transitional approach towards democratic trait of leadership was highly motivated by one of the most influential leaders in world business, Steve Jobs. The transitional history of Steve Jobs from an autocratic leader to a democratic one fostered the idea of adaptation of participating or democratic leadership quality within me so that I can prioritise my students viewpoint while making a decision. However, participative leadership does not mean that every opinion is to be embraced. The process of filtering according to the best decision making factors is the true sign of potential leadership quality. Different activities are to performed in an institutiona l level while educating a greater number of masses. According to Edwin Locke, a participating leader always shares obligations and power of decision making in a workplace. My leadership quality in an institution will remain participative since I believe to share the power of decision making with the students so as to build the same quality within them. A brief anecdote of decision- making process can be exhibited in the paper that validates the trait of my leadership. Most of the educational frameworks are decided in an autocratic way. Student participation in academic layout is not bothered by the authority of an institution. Hence, most of the time the students do not seem to be happy with the academic structure designed by an institutional authority. for the first time I designed a lay out for the institutional academic framework and also provided blank sheets to the students so that they could come up with their thoughts. At the end of the term the students representative sat together with me and the institutional head and proposed their designed. With rational discussion, we ended up in the fact that we had to assemble the entire program so as to keep a balance between both the proposal. In the end of the academic year, we established a new program. For the first time, the students contributed. Strength In A Dolls House Strength in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll House Women have played many roles in marriage throughout history but the primary one has been the role of the submissive, attentive, attractive wife. This role mainly composed of living for her husband and her children. Henrik Ibsen, in his play A Doll's House examines the of the roles of women and men in marriage. A Doll House shows us the story of a woman regaining her strength and self-respect. The main character, Nora begins a difficult search for the self esteem and self worth she has never experienced before. In the beginning of the play Ibsen outlines the typical marital relationship between Torvald and Nora. Torvald is the strong, dignified husband while Nora is little lark twittering. (1565) Torvald's continual reference to Nora using bird names parallels Nora's image of herself. In the first act, Torvald continually refers to Nora as his little spendthrift, his little scatterbrain, his squirrel sulking, and most importantly his song bird.(1565) These images of weak birds characterize Nora as a weak person. The simple twittering, little birds we see every day are very susceptible to cold weather and to dying and so is Nora. The images of a little spendthrift and a little scatterbrain indicate stupidity and ignorance. Nora can't think for herself because her thoughts are scattered and unorganized. She can't assume responsibility for money because she will waste it. In the character of Torvald we are led to believe that he is the loving and accommodating husband. He treats Nora like a child, and she, not knowing any better at this stage, acts accordingly. For example, as a child forbidden by its mother from eating candy before dinner, Nora hides her macaroons from Torvald. Acting like her parent, Torvald suspects her of hiding macaroons from him. He repeatedly asks her if she is sure she didn't eat any macaroons. Surely my sweet tooth hasn't been running riot in town today, has she? he asks (1567) Nora's response to Torvald shows us her lack of self-esteem. Instead of sharing with him her love for macaroons she hides it. Instead of standing up for her rights as a human being to eat what she likes, she acts like a little bird afraid of her own shadow. In the beginning of the play we are introduced to Nora as the weak, stupid, dependent wife. The second stage of her independence is introduced by the invitation to the Stenborgs' costume party. Her invitation to the party with Torvald is extremely significance to her self-esteem. She is desperately trying to find a way to charm Torvald into keeping Krogsard on as an employee at the bank. Through the use of her feminine wiles she hopes to convince her husband that what she requests of him is only a minor request. At this point she is caged as a bird would be caged. She cannot fly away till she gets her independence. Her attendance at the party signifies the fact that she is attempting to break free. She will dance the Tarantella at the party with wild abandonment as this will prove, she realizes to be her last performance, her swan song. In her attempt to break free, she views Mrs. Linde, her childhood friend, as a woman of the world who has experience in the matters of independence. Whenever Torvald is not around Nora, we can see Nora's efforts to break free. Nora shows her strength in the fact that she saved her husband's life. In revealing her secret to Mrs. Linde she attempts to gain independence. When Mrs. Linde comes to visit we see Nora ready to crack wide open with a confession. In explaining her lifes' hardships, Mrs. Linde says, You know so little of life's burdens yourself. (1570) Nora's answer is of strength, I-? I know so little. (1571) You can hear the sarcasm in Nora's words. Mrs. Linde continues on to say, You're just a child. (1571) In response Nora answers, You don't have to act so superior.
